I wrote Blackbird in honor of black and brown lives, inspired by stories, including my own father's stories when he first came to this country. I created it with my producer Jonathan Kreinik. The line "Do you ask this of the sun?" came from a painting by Michael Holman of the band Gray, which I used as the cover art. The text is from a poem by Rio Rayne, which encapsulated what I felt when I wrote this song.
